Rooibos is a herbal tea, also known as bush tea in Southern Africa where it originates.The tea comes from the shrub Aspalathus Linearis, which is only found on the slopes of Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. This tea has grown in popularity in western cultures due to it’s delicate sweet flavour along with numerous health benefits. Many women in Japan drink this tea for its positive effect on the skin and hair. It has been known to clear skin of acne and prevent wrinkles. Because it’s caffeine free, it may be drunk without limit and won’t affect sleep cycles or cause insomnia as with some other popular teas. Finally, locals have even used it as a substitute for milk in colicky babies.
Japanese research has shown that rooibos possesses antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity. Put simply – it is powerfully protective. Additionally, rooibos appears to have anti-allergic properties, for this reason I am personally very fond of this tea.
Additionally, rooibos is a source of two antioxidants, aspalathin and nothofagin which are both relatively rare. Aspalathin is said to help modify hormones in the body and reduces the output of adrenal hormones, thus reducing stress and helping to stop many metabolic disorders. The hormone aspalathin also helps to regulate blood sugar and therefore can reducing the risk of type two diabetes and excessive fat production. The antioxidant nothofagin also demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory activity and, along with aspalathin, speculated to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Both appear to protect nerves.
